VISION

Hockey is the second most popular sport in India, just after cricket with the Indian National Teams (FIH) ranked 3rd in the World. The rise in Indian hockey is alive and well and Hockey Victoria seeks to engage more strongly with Indian hockey, to complement both the further development of the game in India and the development of Victorian hockey talent.

We have identified a range of mutual developmental and performance benefits which can be achieved through a partnership between Hockey Victoria and identified Indian states, governments, sporting organisations and conglomerates. The potential partnership involving the Melbourne Cobras revolves around Sports Diplomacy and Elite High Performance exchange.

HOME OF COBRAS

8th team startingin 2026.

Melbourne Cobras will commence playing in the Hockey One League in the 2026 Season. Melbourne Cobras will entail a minimum of 6 male and 6 female Indian international players. This will provide the connection between the two nations and engage the Indian Diaspora in Victoria and nationally. Local partnerships are just as important, as they provide a direct connection, ensuring engagement in the Outer Northern Suburbs of Melbourne. The Cobras’ home will be in the micro city of Cloverton, located in the Mitchell Shire, where the council, Stockland, and Hockey Victoria collaborate to inspire the Indian community within a high-density growth corridor.

H1 Audience

Hockey One (H1) is Australia’s highest level hockey competition for both male and female players.
The Melbourne Cobras will become the 8th team in 2026, joining the 7 current teams including Adelaide Fire, Canberra Chill, NSW Pride, Brisbane Blaze, Perth Thundersticks, Tassie Tigers and Hockey Club Melbourne. The League which is now going into its fourth season is seeing a rise in international players, including Rupinder Pal Singh who played for the Canberra Chill in 2023. The League is working towards permitting international players across all franchises and building the broadcast interest across Asia with the increase in Asian internationals playing in the competition.
